Lifesaving & patrols

Hampton Life Saving Club's most important role is providing a safe environment. We aim to achieve this through effective, efficient lifesaving patrol service to the public and to protect and preserve human life at the beach.

To be ready for our November and through Easter season each year, members certify (or recertify) for a Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion. Courses generally commence in August or September, and complete in October. There are parent-friendly and intensive schedules available. Final qualification is held at the end of November for all courses. Patrolling doesn't have to be a big time commitment. Regular patrollers form rostered patrol teams that generally take a half-dozen five- to six-hour shifts each season. However, other patrollers come in for occasional patrols or partial shifts. Any contribution is welcomed, and it's a great activity you can do as a family.

Lifesaving Qualifications

There are a number of lifesaving qualifications you can attain:

• Bronze Medallion (15+ years on the date of the assessment)

• Surf Rescue Certificate (13+ years on the date of the assessment)

• Senior First Aid, Spinal Management

• Advanced Resuscitation Techniques, Beach Management

• Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Crew, IRB Driver

• Grey Medallion (55+)

Each year, anyone who holds a lifesaving award needs to complete a brief practical assessment to refresh their knowledge. This is usually run at Hampton, and you will be assisted by members who walk you through the process. A brief online theory assessment is required prior to requalification for some awards, and is noted when you book in for your qualification or requalification online.

If you are over 55, you may be interested in Grey Medallion training, aimed at beach goers, general public and members who have an interest in increasing their current knowledge, experience and understanding of open water environments and water safety.

To book in for a qualification or requalification, please go to your My LSV Anywhere Account and register for the courses that apply to you. Note: You MUST have your membership fees current when you are assessed or you will not be covered by insurance. If you are over 18, you must also  have a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) registered to HLSC and LSV.
